I beg to differ.
The Apple Tax has not gotten 'out of control'.
Apple has always maintained a 30% profit margin
Therefore the tax has ALWAYS been about 25%.
Well, if you are not getting hardware with that money what are you getting?
Does Mac OSX have no value to you?
Could it be worth more than Windows?
A lot more?
Frankly, shouldn't Toshiba/Dell/HP be charging A LOT MORE?
They wish.
Yeesh dude, now were getting into perceived value of a product? Thats the same logic that perpetuates Apple's inflated mark up. And btw naysayers, I have a 27 iMac, iPad 2, and iPhone 4...no product bias against Apple.
The simple fact is, Apple is selling tons of product and will not change their pricing methodology to be competitive (iOS devices aside). I just scratch my head when all the Apple-ites on MR jump down my throat to defend Apple's pricing *Yes Sir may I have another.
You haven't been to Baltimore lately!
Middle of Nowhere is just south of the interstate and is beautiful.
News flash, Macs are popular and plentiful and still have no Viruses.
Don't you worry about the future. It will get here and it will be fine.
Windows users, be afraid, be very afraid.
Thanks for the reassurance:) BTW: I live in Frederick MD and go to Balt'mo about once a month...obviously youve NEVER been to MD's armpit.

Those are some really nice specs, I am sorry if this has been answered before but do we know what Core 2 Duo they are? Conroe or Merom
The 1.83, 2.0, 2.16, and 2.33GHz clock speeds show that it is Merom, not Conroe. Conroe would be 1.86, 2.13 (2MB L2 cache), 2.40, 2.66 (4MB L2 cache), and 2.93 GHz (Core 2 Extreme)
Since the 24" model is at least prosumer, it would have been nice to see that one get a Conroe (Extreme even).

I just barely got my first speedlight a few weeks ago. So I can point it up and put it just low enough to trigger the strobes?
I'd say it's time for some experimentation!

Well a reseller telles me 'what people want' is a 13 inch MBP and this would create something similar but far enough away to justify the price difference.
The MB has not really filled the niche of the 12 inch Powerbook yet.
You can already get a MB with more RAM and larger HDD so what would be the point of that? A 13 inch MBP would make more sense.

Actually I like being a consumer with choices. I've only used my powerbook to burn DVDs maybe thrice. If I had to buy another computer. I'd probably go with a Combo drive since I'd have the powerbook to burn DVDs.
Plus why make everyone's computer more expensive when some people don't want it.
Can you tell me what the price difference between a ComboDrive and a Superdrive is? ComboDrives are probably more expensive now than a simple Single Layer burner, because nobody makes them anymore...
Every 599€ Notebook now has a DVD burner.

if u want a small laptop like that....you would definately not enjoy gaming on it...
I don't know, I really enjoyed gaming on my Sony Vaio S1 (13" screen) back when I used to take it to lan parties.

To be honest, I'm from Germany and I would never ever pay an extra cent for a product manufactured in the US. The caption "Made in the USA" just suggests "Don't buy me, I'm going to suck". All these products I bought that were made in the US were overpriced and mostly of far worse manufacturing quality than comparable products from Asia or Europe. Just my experience, not that I hate Americans or anything, I like their ideas, creativity, inspiration and stuff, but the rest is better done by other people.
In all honesty, this has less to do with reliability, more to do with weakening your own country in the name of larger profit for select few. I have purchased crappy products from Asia/USA/Europe, and I have purchased durable items from Asia/USA/Europe. I guess its more about particular items design/engineering/quality control.

I'm not trying to pee in Apple's Cheerios at all...but i do wonder at what point will they reach a plateau in sales growth.
Valid question. As your next statement points out, Apple is making inroads to China. They also shook up their management overseeing Japan a few years ago, and I believe that, along with the iOS halo effect, they are enjoying great growth there, too. Just look at the lines at Japanese store events.

Reception to the original iPod launch was mixed. Our own forum responses (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=500) are interesting to look back on, 10 years later.
Interesting indeed! Several forum members where asking for further development of Newton instead... a device that could possibly do everything digital... optical out... and so on. And here we go, only then year after we have these portable iDevices, so no need the iPod anymore. But I can operate the iPod without the need of looking at it, thanks to the scroll-weel, a truly revolutionary and easy to operate interface, yet to be really replaced (more like irreplaceable) by the touch one.

I'm sorry to tell this. It's strange to read 'There's something in the air' after just finishing reading an article about the biggest carpet bombing operation since 2003.
1) But I'd like to have my poor Airport Express updated for sound while watching movies.
2) And the poor iPod HIFI should be an iPod WIFI.
2) Wireless Blu-ray for the MacBook Nano.
3) iPhone 2 as a high speed internet hub when using the MacBook on the road.
4) A solution to get rid of all the cables?

The right to bear arms ? In a toy store ? Really...
And they don't infringe your rights at all, the constitution grants you rights in your dealings with the government, not private entities.
I think that Coolestdude is upset over this -

A debate over a lease near an NRA space. To that end - spend your dollars where you want is my say on it....

The publishing rights are what was being discussed and it's every song in the Beatles catalog. There are other songs by the Beatles and the individual artists which are not part of the catalog being discussed. I wasn't referring to those, or the mechanical rights.
People seemed to think that Sony/ATV controlled (and profited from) the Beatles music available on iTunes so I was just making it clear. :)

I do hope if they are going to up the megapixelage for marketing purposes, they at least give us more memory in the base configuration to handle all the extra space the photos are gonna waste.
Unless of course Sony has secretly created the greatest sensor in the history of the world and the 8MP can be justified. That would be nice.

Top 10 defense contractors employ over 1 million people. If you cut their federal contracts by 40%, how many people will they have to lay off, 40%? 30% 20%. Do the math.
Why is that different for any other part of the federal budget? Federal $ = Federal jobs + Contractor jobs.
Just as a rough estimate using the numbers from http://www2.census.gov/govs/apes/09fedfun.pdf and http://www.wallstats.com/deathandtaxes/
The total discretionary federal budget is ~1.45T and civilian payroll is ~2.5M This comes out roughly to 580K/direct federal civilian job. (Since military is included in the budget, but not the jobs, it's really should be quite a bit lower than that.) And of course the money that does not go to pay a federal employee's salary or benefits will go to pay the salary of benefits of a government contractor or subcontractor. (The number is not that far off from what I am used to as a budgetary consideration for DoD R&D engineering contracts, so I'll stick with it).
So a $60B cut (that isn't enough) will result in > 100K federal jobs lost and likely a similar number of first line government contractors.

This is surprising. I feel like if Apple does the voice integration into iOS well enough, it could be the future of iOS. Sort of like how multitouch got things started, voice will bring it even further. I bet there were tons of people out there who were doubting touchscreens on phones 4 years ago. Everyone still wanted a keyboard.

This is no longer true.

The iPod touch is quite thin already.. moving some parts around and adding a hard drive in it could make it about as thick as the iPhone but with the capacity of a Mac.. just think of the possibilities..
Reminds me about the Palm LifeDrive.. it's about time a modern device takes it over.
As a couple stated on this page and I brought up several pages ago, a HDD based touch is something you won't see, based on the HDs latency and speed issues.

There are many possibilities for the graphics of the Macbook. The GMA950 is at about the end of the road. Maybe we'll see Intel's X3000. If not, one of Nvidia's or ATi's integrated solutions would be nice.
I doubt we will see a change in graphics. I mean, I still see Dell and the other computer makers offering the 950 for their "consumer" laptops. Apple is usually a few weeks behind Dell et. al. in offering the newer components, so I would be very pleasantly surprised if Apple actually changed the graphics.

Well it's gotten so bad that the ipods now need an ipod app button! what happened!? i don't even like ios to begin with. and who are you to laugh at this? I'm not going back to threads from 4 years ago to satisfy your laughter thank you. leave the damn apps for the phones or the ipads. I can say im laughing at all the people talking about how "horrible" the click wheel is to use but i don't, i could laugh at all the ppl with the out with the old and in with the new personality but i don't. Capacity is priority and i LOVE the click wheel alright? sorry for quoting you directly but it was me who said that they should leave the gadget business but you seem to have forgotten i meant this for the iPod lineup. i mean look at what the nano has become. a little square. i hate it. it looks like it could be an iWatch.
